My wedding ring is turning my finger greenish black. It looks like tarnish, except that my ring is solid gold and I have worn it for 14 years. What is causing this? I have not been using any cleaners or different soap so I dont think it is from chemicals.

well its probably a really good fake and not showing up till now?
Maybe it was gold plated and the gold is wearing off! Take it to a jeweler for an inspection. If it’s gold plated, oh no, your husband’s gonna get it!!!
I think your ring is fake. if its tarnishing and turning your finger greenish black. its fake.
don’t go thinking your husband is cheap,LOL
you have to much potassium ,or iron in your Body .
Maybe you have developed an allergy to gold after all these years…take it to a jeweler, they should be able to help you.
Have you changed your diet at all lately? Using a new soap or skin conditioner? Acidity or something else can do that.
are you sure it’s solid gold? who told you that?
My mother developed sensativity to metals after her 2nd round of radiation and chemo. She had to stop wearing her wedding ring after 35 years. Her doctor said that it might have also had something to do with the fact that she has been in the restaurant biz for over 50 years – her skin has said, “enough!”
If you wear it in water a lot (ie: a shower) or washing your hands a lot, it could just be wear and tear, or a climate change that could be doing it. Other than that it could be fake.
Sounds like you developed a sensitivity to something mixed with the gold to make it solid — possibly nickel. Leave the ring off for a few weeks and see if that helps.
That’s happened to me too…but usually just goes away…must be a chemical reaction with some body hormone at a particular time….my jewelry is gold but it happens for what appears to be no reason….then doesn’t occur again for months…weird…
One of two things, either it was just gold plated or you are having some really acidic skin which is making you have reactions. I myself have to watch what jewelry I wear because medications I take cause me to have acidic skin. I’d take it to a jewelry store and see what they have to say, if that doesn’t do anything make yourself a dr’s appt. to get your blood checked. High acid levels in your skin can be a sign of serious medical problems. hope this helps you out.
There are several reasons why this could be happening, and you’re right it is a form of tarnish. First there are several forms of “gold plating” used in the united states..contrary to the popular belief it is not just a cheap substitute for better jewelry. Gold Filled items, can be marked as high as 18 k…and still have a base metal that has been plated with the gold in alternating layers…reasons for this are to give the setting “rigidity” helping it to last longer and wear better. This is common in a lot of jewelry and is not a bad husband problem…
Why is it turning you greenish/black now…the people who said acids in your skin, hormonal changes are almost correct here, it is that and…after wearing the ring continuously for 14 yrs, you’ve simply worn through a spot on the ring, most probably on the inside of the ring..exposing some part of the base metal, which most likely is “nickel” thus the acids in your skin are causing a chemical reaction with nickel and boom a greenish black ring around your finger.
I would quess you would want to fix your ring….easy as cake, take it to any qualified jeweler….have him re-plate and repair your ring, he will ask you what type of plating you want, rhodium is the most popular and least expensive but the jeweler will tell you all your options. Figure from 25.00 to 85.00 is reasonable depending on what you choose to fix your ring.
If it just started and you have been wearing the ring all along with no problem, then it’s probably not the ring. If you want to keep wearing it, paint the inside of the ring with a coat or two of clear nail polish. It will create a buffer between your skin and the ring. I tried this when my favorite necklace suddenly started bothering me. It works!
It is doubtful that your rings are fake. I purchased my rings from a reputable dealer and I know they are 14k gold. However, the same thing happens to me when I use certain oils or lotions (baby oil is one and Olay Quench is another that I can think of right now). My skin turns color and it looks like I’m wearing cheap jewelry. The other thing that causes this discoloration is Vitamin C – whether eating citrus fruit or taking a Vitamin C supplement. The citric acid stays in the system longer so your rings will discolor longer. There isn’t much you can do except avoid the offenders (if this is the cause). You’ll have to experiment to find out. Good luck and keep your wedding rings. Love doesn’t turn color!
clean with jewellery cleaner or toothpast regularly
This may sound odd, but i had the same thing happen to me, It was my body chemistry, , it changed because of some medications i was on, as soon i was finished with the meds, and they were out of my system it quit. could this be a possibilty for you?
