Westernized Wedding Celebrations
In today’s current trends in wedding, Western style wedding practices are the most popular across the world. Several countries which was greatly influenced by Western culture such as the Philippines and other Asian countries, have adapted the Westernized style of weddings, such as wearing white wedding dresses as well as the traditional toast and wedding dance in their wedding reception. However, some countries still holds their own wedding traditions while adding some from Western-style wedding practices into their own. One example is with the Japanese wedding practices.
The Japanese wedding practice were as colorful as that of the Chinese, but because of Western influences, the “Western Style Wedding” (influenced by Christian weddings) has become the choice of most couples in Japan. An industry has sprung up, dedicated to providing couples with a ceremony modeled after church rituals. Japanese western style weddings are generally held in a chapel, either in a simple or elaborate ceremony, often at a dedicated wedding chapel within a hotel.
However, couples could still opt to choosing their own traditional wedding practice, which is called Shinto wedding, aside from Western Style Wedding practices. But because of these two types of ceremonies, Shinto and Western, made available, it was bound for the two to be combined. This wedding is now known as a contemporary Japanese wedding.
Contemporary Japanese weddings are wedding practice in which both Shinto style wedding and Western style wedding practices are combined. Popular practice includes a Shinto temple as well as a Shinto priest, the exchange of nuptial cups of sake, as well as the the exchange of rings and weddings vows which are popular Western-style wedding traditions.
Like Western-style traditions, a reception takes place right after the wedding ceremony. The reception does not include any random activities, but follows a strict order of events. The reception includes dramatic entrances by the bride and the groom with special effects, speeches, and other performances.
The traditional Western-style toast is also practiced in contemporary Japanese weddings. What follows the toast are the short congratulatory speeches made by relatives, friends, and colleagues. During this time, the bride has gone to change into her first costume and continues throughout the reception.
Other popular adaptation of Western-style wedding traditions into other wedding practices is with the Chinese wedding reception. Chinese wedding reception of today are still practiced traditionally with the food being the most important part. However, the cutting of the cake, which is a Western-style wedding tradition, has also been incorporated into their own wedding reception practices. Another is the wearing of the traditional white wedding dress aside from the red and gold bridal gown.
