Congratulations on your engagement. Once you’ve celebrated your engagement, it’s now time to start planning.
Why South Devon?
South Devon offers the perfect place for your special day. From the rushing rivers and rolling hills of Dartmoor, beautiful South Hams countryside, to the rugged cliff tops and secluded coves of the South Devon coastline, there is much to offer.
A popular holiday destination for all the family, South Devon is also a sought after location for the perfect wedding. Other than the beautiful landscape, the area boasts a range of special Devon wedding venues, from the character and charm of the country house hotel to the option of a marquee tailored to your tastes, whether it’s overlooking the stunning coast or the beautiful Devon countryside.
Choosing Your Reception Venue
Choosing your venue is one of the most important decisions. Once a date and a venue is finalised you can then go onto choosing your colour scheme, flowers and bridesmaids dresses – the fun part!
Devon is home to a range of special wedding venues, including coastal boutique hotels, country houses, country golf clubs, historical houses and estates, castles and much more. Dartmoor’s dramatic moorland and the beaches of South Devon provide the perfect backdrop for a wedding.
Hotels are often the first place people look to hold a wedding reception. However, there are many alternatives to choose from if you fancy something a little bit different. Some venues include Dartmouth Castle, Bickleigh Castle, Kents Cavern and Bicton Botanical Park and Gardens.
Country house hotel venues include The Ilsington Hotel, The Deer Park Hotel and Passage House Hotel, among a few. If you are looking for a venue by the sea there are a few to choose from including The Cary Arms, Powderham Castle and Soar Mill Cove.
The Ceremony
If you are religious, it is obviously traditional to get married in a church. However, these days there are more and more places which have a licence to hold civil ceremonies. More and more hotels are now licensed to hold civil ceremonies and in some hotel grounds you can even get married outside. You will, however, have to get in contact with the local registrar yourself, although many hotels provide the details you will need.
The Wedding Checklist
The wedding checklist is the perfect way to ensure the smooth running of the planning of your wedding. From planning your guest list and managing invites to organising your colour scheme and flowers. Here are a few things worth including in your checklist:
6-12 Months:
Reserve wedding and reception locations
Select wedding dress, veil and accessories
Choose bridesmaid, groom and ushers attire
Organise meetings with florists and discuss colour schemes
Meet with photographers and music entertainment
Discuss guest list
Discuss honeymoon
4-6 Months
Order dresses, accessories, etc
Order invitations and send – consider options for guest accommodation
Order wedding cake
2 Months
Think about dressing of the rooms and tables
Organise seating plan
Organise a timetable/schedule for the day and ensure Best Man and Head Bridesmaid are aware of the processes
Purchase gifts for bride, groom and favours for bridesmaids and ushers
