Two First Novels, 10 Years In The Making
Fiction writing isn’t for the faint of heart; it promises years of obscurity, little money, and no guarantee that anyone will ever read your work. Yet authors keep at it — WMRA’s Martha Woodroof caught up with two first-time novelists, Jessica Francis Kane and Susanna Daniel, to find out what it takes.

A marriage is finalized under the guidance of a priest where the family members present their convenient dates to the priest. He decides a mutually convenient date and announces the details of marriage, inclusive of the marriage venue and time.

Sumangali Poojai makes it more special

There are several routines to be gone through before marriage. A traditional Sumangali Poojai is a ritual conducted to bless the bride. It is intended to make her way to heaven before her would-be husband. For a wife to die before her husband is considered as a boon in the Hindu tradition. Followed by it is a bathing ritual conducted in both the bride and the bridegroom’s family separately. They are massaged and anointed with sacred oils. Thereafter they are given a bath in turmeric water; scientifically meant to cool the body. Then the bridegroom reaches the wedding site a day before the wedding where he is formally greeted by the bride’s family and is gifted with ornaments and dress for the marriage.

The thread (Thali) is a symbol of acceptance

As a part of the ritual, the bridegroom is welcomed again by the bride’s family to join them. This ritual is termed as Janavasanam.  On the day of marriage, the bride and the bridegroom are given special bath an hour before the marriage. They are then invited to the marriage hall after showing aarthi (formally a camphor ball set on fire on a plate filled with a red colored liquid). This is to banish the demons that have been revolving around the couple. Followed by this, the bride performs special prayers to a Hindu Goddess by name, Gauriamma. During this prayer, the bridegroom feigns to leave to a pilgrimage, where he is blocked and pleaded by the bride’s father to come back and live with his daughter. Proceeded by it, the bridegroom and bride are invited to the dias where the bridegroom ties a thread around the bride’s neck and accepts her to his wife. This thread is called Thali by tradition.

Acquaintance is given due importance

The bridegroom is given due respect by presenting him with clothes and jewels from the bride’s family, meanwhile the bride is invited to step into her new home. To acknowledge that the bride is a part of the family, the bridegroom’s sister presents her with gifts and conducts games between the couple to make them more acquainted. At the end of the day, the bride prepares food for the bridegroom’s family and packs a few for her new home too. Sometimes the rituals continue for more than a week. It depends on how traditional the families are.

Rings are one of the best gifts a bride or bridegroom can have. In India, rings have a special meaning, especially when it comes to wedding rings. Beautiful, engraved, cut out, plain and designer – they come in all forms. Of course they come in all designs and forms but before we go for a diamond or gold wedding ring, we must have the basic knowledge about them so that nobody is able to make a fool out of us.

Gold has two variants – Yellow gold and White Gold. Yellow gold is the one which is known to us from our grandparent’s time. The shine and the shimmer of gold never fades away and it stands true to this day. With very small percentage of copper mixed in it, gold is hardened to cut out the beautiful ornaments we proudly wear and flaunt. It’s generally found in 14k, 18k or 24k units. 24karat gold is the purest (that is with minimum copper in it and so is the softest. For daily use 14k and 18k are the best.

White Gold is the latest in the market. Those with a different taste prefer the white gold jewellery. It has a mix of silver and platinum in it. Costlier than gold yet cheaper than platinum, it attracts a number of people.

The third category is called Platinum Gold. Platinum is the hardest metal after diamond. Found in earth in lesser quantity than gold, it need not be mixed with any other metal to make it hard. This is the reason why it is costlier than gold or white gold.

Once decided which type of ring you want, look for the design. Generally pure gold or studded rings are costlier than the designer ones. Several brands like Orra, Gold Souk, Geetanjali, Tanishq, Kiah, Nirvana Diamonds, and D’damas are the best known brands in the name of jewellery. Buying wedding rings from these brands have an advantage of getting the guarantee certificate that the gold or diamond you are buying is pure.

Winter Wedding Tips

Although there’s no question that getting married in the cooler months – especially when you’re talking snowy and icy environs – necessitates some pretty warm clothes to ensure you get to your ceremony and reception and back without being afflicted by frostbite.

Although traditional white can look fantastic in strong summer light, in colder months it can tend to look a bit washy and disappear into the background.

For an autumn, winter or early spring wedding you might find that a rich, darker variant works far better; cream, gold, pale pink, pale blue, silver or even a non-traditional color.

Particularly if you are not having a traditional you really can choose whatever color scheme takes your fancy, and bearing in mind that weddings during these months can be affected by dull, darkish weather some vibrant colors and fashion statements will go a long way towards compensating for the lack of light and warmth.

If you’re getting married in potentially wet and/or muddy circumstances, you might well like to consider the length of your wedding dress, and whether or not a train is necessary – or at least, if a train can be ‘bustled’ to a height above ground level.

Ditto for the bridesmaid’s dresses assuming they’re full length.

That’s because no matter how careful you are to hitch up your skirts as you tiptoe through the rainy, muddy church yard or outdoor surroundings of any type of wedding venue, something may distract you, you let go, and you could finish up with unpleasant brownish stains around your hem.

Hemlines that are a couple of centimeters above ground level (with shoes on) will stay above all but the most pesky of puddles and continue looking good throughout the day.

Footwear

Here’s where we need to get boring for a bit and think about the realities of northern hemisphere weddings in the autumn, winter and spring. Whether we like it or not, these times can be wet – and more invasive wet than the summer days when you get a shower or two. And that’s before you begin to consider the cold factor.

Have no fear. Provided that you plan appropriately your wedding footwear not only can be water-resistant, but also warm as well.

One very sensible option is to go for wedding boots – typically, wedding boots of the old Victorian style which are quite easily available. They’re comfortable, wearable, and should they poke out from under your dress, look lovely.

Remember, to choose a winter wedding bouquet, your bouquet should have winter accents. Winter accents are like pine cones, holly leaves, baby’s breath, berries and others.

Winter flowers are like freesias, lilies, poinsettias, hydrangeas or even roses. Combine winter flowers with winter accents, you get a lovely wedding bouquet.
