Although there’s no question that getting married in the cooler months – especially when you’re talking snowy and icy environs – necessitates some pretty warm clothes to ensure you get to your ceremony and reception and back without being afflicted by frostbite.
Although traditional white can look fantastic in strong summer light, in colder months it can tend to look a bit washy and disappear into the background.
For an autumn, winter or early spring wedding you might find that a rich, darker variant works far better; cream, gold, pale pink, pale blue, silver or even a non-traditional color.
Particularly if you are not having a traditional you really can choose whatever color scheme takes your fancy, and bearing in mind that weddings during these months can be affected by dull, darkish weather some vibrant colors and fashion statements will go a long way towards compensating for the lack of light and warmth.
If you’re getting married in potentially wet and/or muddy circumstances, you might well like to consider the length of your wedding dress, and whether or not a train is necessary – or at least, if a train can be ‘bustled’ to a height above ground level.
Ditto for the bridesmaid’s dresses assuming they’re full length.
That’s because no matter how careful you are to hitch up your skirts as you tiptoe through the rainy, muddy church yard or outdoor surroundings of any type of wedding venue, something may distract you, you let go, and you could finish up with unpleasant brownish stains around your hem.
Hemlines that are a couple of centimeters above ground level (with shoes on) will stay above all but the most pesky of puddles and continue looking good throughout the day.
Footwear
Here’s where we need to get boring for a bit and think about the realities of northern hemisphere weddings in the autumn, winter and spring. Whether we like it or not, these times can be wet – and more invasive wet than the summer days when you get a shower or two. And that’s before you begin to consider the cold factor.
Have no fear. Provided that you plan appropriately your wedding footwear not only can be water-resistant, but also warm as well.
One very sensible option is to go for wedding boots – typically, wedding boots of the old Victorian style which are quite easily available. They’re comfortable,wearable, and should they poke out from under your dress, look lovely.
Remember, to choose a winter wedding bouquet, your bouquet should have winter accents. Winter accents are like pine cones, holly leaves, baby’s breath, berries and others.
Winter flowers are like freesias, lilies, poinsettias, hydrangeas or even roses. Combine winter flowers with winter accents, you get a lovely wedding bouquet.
