I’m attending an Indian family wedding soon. I’m not in the wedding party, but would like to wear an Indian outfit for the daytime portion. However, I will have a 4 month old to breastfeed and wanted to know if anyone can recommend what I should wear. I would like to wear a sari – any advice to give? We are going shopping on Saturday for this.

What color sari would look good on someone who’s blond with green eyes and fair skin?
Myla – that’s a poor answer! I said it’s a family wedding and if you know anything about Indian weddings, the ceremonies can run 3 hours. This one starts at 8am and goes until the evening reception.

One of the biggest dilemmas you face as a bride is how to have your hair. If you choose an updo, deciding on which style of the many wedding updos is just as difficult. If you are struggling read on…

Before you decide on what type of wedding updo or hair style you are going for, you need to decide on the wedding dress and veil. Obviously these all have to work together and compliment each other. Generally brides wouldn’t have traditional over the face veils with tall wedding updos (it rarely works), so it’s important that you are sure about the dress and veil before embarking on the search for wedding updos.

Some of the places to get inspiration are search engines, try Googling ‘wedding updos’ and reduce the options down to just images. Visit hair salons where they have tons of magazines and the stylists will have plenty of experience in creating perfect wedding updos. They generally have at least one stylist who specialises in updos. Visit Wedding Fairs as there are usually many hair stylists there with plenty of reference points and individual ideas.

When it comes to choosing a stylist, this of course is a personal thing and you can choose for many different reasons. For example, you may believe in using local traders and businesses or you may have a friend that works in a salon. If you know anyone locally that has been married recently find out where they had their hair styled and see if they were happy with the whole experience. They may even show you pictures as people love to re-visit the wedding day.

Hair extensions can be a great help if you have short hair but want a wedding updo to make the day special. There isn’t a hair extension method that works for everyone so you will need to speak to your stylist to find what’s best for your hair type. There are about 40 different hair extension methods. You can choose from permanent or clip-in hair extensions, so you need to decide whether you want it just for the day or the honeymoon and beyond.

A word of warning: You need to be careful with hair extensions because if it’s not done properly, having extensions can damage your hair permanently. There are cases of people having to have them cut out because they were done so badly, so if you are having hair extensions do some research and find someone with a track record and some referrals if you can.

The cost is another thing that will determine how elaborate a wedding updo you may have. If you are getting married on a budget then you may have a very talented sister, aunt or best friend that can do your hair. I would suggest if it is the latter, that you invest in a step by step guide. It will be cheaper than paying for a top stylist. Check local colleges for trainee hair stylists that are coming to the end of their diploma. They will give their services cheaply to get their portfolio started and they are eager for the experience and can be quite talented with new and fresh ideas.

Well… I hope this helps and I hope you have a great day.

we paid a fair amount for our photographer and some family members are asking for copies of the photos of themselves from the wedding which is fine, but i’m almost being made to feel that it’s my job to make sure they get a picture. normally i wouldn’t mind but my photographer happens to be a friend and he mentioned to me about one aunt and uncle making a point of having him wait until all their kids were around to do a ‘family shot’ of them all dressed up rather than the relaxed ‘un-posed-for’ shots that i was hoping for. is it just me or does that seem an odd request at somebodys wedding? now they’re asking me to send them a larger than average print of that ‘family pic’. and mentioning this to another family member, the response i got was ‘well do i get one of me and my kids as well then? oh thats lovely’. i almost feel like saying – its a pic from my wedding not a free family portrait of your day out so it’s staying in the wedding album’ but i feel really nasty by feeling that way. it wouldn’t hurt to get a cheapy copy done at a supermarket but these are my wedding day photos, and i feel like they’re being treated as a free way of getting a dressed up family pic. even my step mother copied them to her laptop without asking. my photographer didn’t password protect the disk because he is a friend and i feel like that fact is being abused. i know i’m over-reacting to a certain extent here but is it just me or are people taking the mickey a little?
