how to choose wedding flowers

how to choose wedding flowers
Choosing wedding flowers is such an important part of the wedding. There are some things to be aware of when you are ready to decide on your wedding flowers.

Since your flowers are an essential part of the wedding you should begin by preparing a budget. When you have a budget in place you will have a very good idea what the flowers are going to cost. If you don’t have a budget you could easily end up spending far more money than you had planned.

If you haven’t already decided on a florist you may want to ask the advice of family and friends. Pay close attention to the recommendations of those who have recently been married. The newly married will be able to offer you good advice. You can also talk to the people who are in charge of the ceremony and reception sites. These folks often have great ideas for the best florists.

You may want to make a few visits to the florists that you are considering. When you are actually in the business you will see how the customers are treated and if the shop is clean and organized. Take a good look at the flower bouquets and arrangements and notice the design and freshness of the flowers.

Figure out how many arrangements, bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages that you will need. Take this information with you any time you talk to a florist about the wedding flowers.

Before you decide on your wedding flowers, talk to more than one florist. You might want to bring pictures of bouquets and arrangements that you like. Also bring pictures of your dress and the bridesmaid’s dresses. All these things will be instrumental in assuring the most beautiful wedding flowers possible.

Make sure you have samples of the colors you plan to use in the wedding. This will be very helpful in choosing the colors of the flowers.

You might want to ask the florist for some photos of wedding flowers they have designed. Many florists keep a book of wedding flower photos exactly for this purpose.

Talk to your florist about using flowers that match the style of your wedding. If you are having a casual wedding you may want to use different flowers than if you are planning a traditional wedding.

You also might want to consider using wedding flowers that are specific to your region and to the season in which you are getting married. This will not only keep the cost down but you will not have to worry about the flowers being available.

Choose your wedding flowers carefully and they will be a wonderful part of your wedding.

It is often said that the flowers at a wedding were “As pretty as a picture” and they remain so captured in the photographic images forever. But, as it is also said: “A picture paints a thousand words…” so what might your wedding flowers be saying about you?

Think carefully about what kind of a statement you want to make: “This is me and this is my big day and I’m going to be beautiful and enjoy it.” Or “Hey guys, lets have some fun, be wacky, enjoy ourselves and CELEBRATE!” Or perhaps: “This is the coolest, most sophisticated wedding you will ever have been to.” The dress, the bridesmaids, venue and the music all come together to help you make that statement but the one area in which you can really demonstrate yourself and your individual style is through your flowers.

But how well do you know your florist, or does he/she know you? The more they know about you, your likes and dislikes and what makes you tick, your favourite colours and materials, the more likely you are to be able to work with them to reproduce your style and personality within your wedding flowers.

What sort of a flower person are you? Your personality should always be reflected within your choice of wedding flowers and, surprisingly enough, similar personality types will chose similar flowers – but the better you get to know your florist the more they will be able to recognise in you what types of flowers are going to suit your taste and make constructive suggestions.

The Artistic Bride

An artistic type of personality will be creative and take pleasure in the unconventional, perhaps enjoy travelling, museum and theatrical productions. They are often found searching for personal betterment and will be attracted to anything from new age to the arts. Most usual choice of flowers for this type of person are exotic varieties in unusual colours, such as Orchids, Lisianthus, Calla Lillies, Hypericum, Roses, Gerbera, Anthiriums . People from this category usually want a designer bouquet, unique to them, never seen before, often including within it willow constructions (wooden cages or framework around which the bouquet is made) or bold use of Aluminium wire for a more contemporary look.

The Romantic Bride

A romantic on the other hand is often a generous, spontaneous, possibly extravagant individual who dreams of a fairy tale wedding – with flowers everywhere. Shades of white or pastel colours are favourites within this group, light fragrances often accented with lace or ribbons and intricate jewelled detailing. Brides from this group love to see lots of flowers, cascading pedestal arrangements are favourites, as are petals sprinkled on their tables. Increasingly popular within this group are the types of bouquet where you have petals within a central framework and when the bride throws the bouquet her guests are showered with the petals. These brides love their flower girls to throw petals in front of her as she makes her way through her guests.

The Natural Bride

Preferring a wide mixture of flowers and materials, the natural girl is very casual and down-to-earth. In her bouquet you will find lots of natural materials – wood, different types of foliage mixed together, lots of different types or varieties of flowers, buds and berries. A lover of life and the outdoors, she loves a ‘just picked from the garden’ feel to her flowers. Asters, spray Roses, Tulips, Delphiniums, Carnations, Hyacinths, Lisianthus, Muscari and Ivy are all favourites. Her table centres are likely be full and generous miniature gardens.

The Traditional Bride

A traditional bride on the other hand will choose flowers which illustrate her trustworthy, family-orientated, classical sense of style. She appreciates lush arrangements with a limited variety of flowers. Long stemmed Lilies and Roses are popular choices for larger bouquets. Carnations and Chrysanthemums are often seen in table arrangements of this person.

The Contemporary Bride

Brides who prefer a contemporary style to their flowers are often seen as ‘cutting edge trend setters’ who enjoy living life to the full and very much for the moment. Often impulsive, they pride themselves on knowing the most ‘in vogue’ trends before everyone else. Loving to be the centre of attention these personalities will choose bold colours and arrangements with contemporary containers in order to ‘make their statement’. Anthiriums, Bird of Paradise Flowers, Heliconia, Amaranthus and Orchids are all popular choice with these brides.

Whatever your individual personality type and style, the better you get to know your florist the more he/she is going to be able to help you to make your statement with as much impact as possible. So, whether you want to be as subtle as the English Rose itself or as bright as a Sunflower, take time out of your busy pre-wedding schedule and get closer to your florist!

Your floral budget can certainly run the gauntlet. On average you should expect to spend about 8-10% of your overall wedding budget on the flowers. This will include the bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres, and any ceremony and reception decor.

While this is a good estimate, you can modify many floral elements to determine the actual amount you will spend on your wedding flowers. Factors such as whether or not the flowers you choose are in season in your area, the number, size and complexity of the arrangements, and the location of the ceremony and reception all influence your final cost estimate.

You should already have an idea of your overall floral budget before meeting with your florist for the first time. That said, there are a number of ways to cut costs without cutting elegance and beauty.

Ways to Save on Wedding Flowers:

Reduce the number of attendants in your wedding party. Less attendants means your florist will have to create fewer bouquets.
Reduce the number of guests at your wedding. Fewer tables means fewer floral centerpieces.
Choose in-season wedding flowers. They are often less expensive and easier to find. For a list of common flowers for each season, visit our wedding flowers by seasons guide.
Choose a naturally beautiful location. A springtime wedding in a garden hardly needs additional floral arrangements, while an ornate church may be breathtaking on its own. Also consider that many facilities are decorated for the holidays, so holding a December wedding may provide you with gorgeous poinsettias and garland free of cost.
Choose less complicated flowers. Certain flowers will run up of the cost of your floral budget no matter what season. Ask your florist to review your options with you.

1. Flowers that tend to be expensive: Lily of the Valley, Calla Lily, Orchids, Magnolias, Peonies, Gardenia and Hydrangea.
2. Flowers that tend to be moderately priced: Orange Blossoms, Lavender, Daffodil, Daisies, Chrysanthemum, Carnations, Roses (due to huge variance in kind, quality, and color) and Greenery, such as ivy

Consider options other than floral arrangements for table centerpieces. Ask your florist for ideas. Scattered flower petals surrounded by votive candles create an elegant effect that won’t maximize your floral budget. This wedding flowers and wedding decorations guide has a list of even more ideas for alternative arrangements.
