The 1st chorus depicts the awakening, the bridegroom comes, the virgins awake from their slumber. The original melody was taken from the hymn “Wachet Auf” by Philipp Nicolai, and harmony was added by Bach. The first movement, is the four-part chorale fantasia of the chorale melody with a very quick tempo, suggesting the sudden confusion caused by the “Wachet auf!” (“Awake!”).
